A computed tomography finally reveals the sad truth: Nolan, who is now three years old, suffers from rhabdomyosarcoma, a very rare and aggressive type of cancer that affects the soft tissues.
It quickly becomes clear that Nolan’s days are numbered. Nolan fights bravely, but in vain. After 18 months of fighting cancer, Nolan dies in his mother’s arms at the age of four. To deal with the grief, she posts her last moments together in the hospital in a touching Facebook post.
“I sat down next to him on the bed, leaned my head on his and we had this conversation:
‘Me: darling, it hurts to breathe, doesn’t it?
Nolan: Well … yes.
Me: You are in a lot of pain, right?
Nolan (looks at the floor): Yes.
Me: honey, this cancer is big crap. You don’t have to fight anymore.
Nolan (full of joy): NOT ??? But I’ll do it for you mommy!
Me: No, darling! Is that what you did Did you fight for mommy?
Nolan: Of course!
Me: Nolan Ray, what is mom’s job?
Nolan (with a huge grin): To protect me.
Me: Honey, … I can’t do that here anymore. The only place I can protect you is in heaven. (My heart broke.)
Nolan: So I’ll just play in heaven and wait for you. You’re coming, aren’t you?
Me: Of course! You can’t get rid of Mommy that easily!
Nolan: Thank you, Mommy! I’ll play with Hunter and Brylee and Henry. ‘
Around 9 p.m. we watched videos in bed and I asked Nolan if I could take a quick shower. Usually he always had to have me by his side, I always had to touch him. He just said, ‘Hmm, ok Mommy. Uncle Chris can sit next to me and I turn so I can see you. ‘ I stood in the bathroom door, turned to him and said, ‘Look right here, darling, I’ll be ready in two seconds.’
He smiled at me. I closed the door. They later told me that the moment the door closed, he closed his eyes and fell into a deep sleep. The beginning of the end. When I opened the door, his attendants were standing around him. They looked up at me and everyone had tears in their eyes. They said, ‘Ruth, he’s in a deep slumber. He doesn’t feel anything anymore. ‘ I ran up to him and gently stroked his face. Then a miracle happened that I will never forget.
My little angel took a deep breath, opened his eyes, smiled at me and said, ‘I love you, Mommy.’ Then at 11:45 p.m. he turned his head and died while I sang ‘You are my sunshine’ in his ear.
He woke up from his coma to tell me with a smile that he loves me! “
